Flora Johnson

Grandma’s House is the vision of its founder:

Grandma’s House is the vision of the founder Flora Johnson are tired teacher and elementary school principal. Mrs. Johnson retire from the Elk Grove Unified School District in 2007 and moved back to the city of her youth, Tulare, California. She returned to Tulare, California with a vision for helping at-risk children and that vision was called, “Grandma’s House – A Vision of Hope.

This was a program for kindergarten through sixth grade students. This program would provide direct instruction to children who needed some additional support to be successful academically. She organized a team of volunteers of various professions: retired teachers and others who wanted to give back to the community.

It is Mrs. Johnson’s belief, as stated in an old African Proverb, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child”; that it takes the community working together to bring about resources and opportunities for our children who need our support. It is true, they are our future, and we need to invest in them, little or much, whatever we can give time, effort and our finances.

The vision of Mrs. Johnson’s has become a reality and it is celebrating its sixteenth year. The program now consists of three programs:

  • Grandma’s House Preschool and Family Resource Center for 2 – 6-year-olds
  • Math Academy for 7th and 8th graders
  • Reading Language Arts Program for Kindergarten-Eight Grade
