A nation that fails to educate it’s children is a nation without a future.

Grandma’s House After-School Tutoring Reading and Language Arts Program was the first of the three programs started by the founder, Mrs. Flora Johnson. This program started in August 2008. It was phase I of the program. This was kindergarten through sixth grade; however, we now take any student up to eighth grade who need support in reading and language arts. This is a free program for any at-risk student. We also provide homework support.

This program is available Tuesday – Thursday. The teachers work from 1:30-2:30 (prep time) and the students start to arrive from 2:45 – 3:00. We are open three days a week. Tutoring is over at 5:00p.m.

Table Talk: (3:00 – 3:30)

The children start to arrive at the end of their school day at approximately 2:40. When they arrive, they sign in, wash their hands, join the other students at the table and prepare for a “Family Style After-school snack”. During this thirty-minute snack time, we have what is called, “Table Talk”. This is an opportunity for the students to share anything that happened during their day. Table talk is a time when we build support for each other and give students time to express themselves and get positive feedback.

Direct Instruction: (3:30 – 4:50)

  • When students enroll, they are assessed to determine the area of academic need.
  • This determination drives the instructional delivery so that we can fill in the “Learning Gap”.
  • Children are assessed throughout the year, to determine growth and inform instruction.
  • It takes 70% or better to determine the success of a given concept.

Prepare to Leave: (4:50 – 5:00)
Students finish their work and get ready for their parents to pick them up.

Family Style Snack Time at Grandma’s House

Family-style snack time is important at Grandma’s House. It gives us a chance to talk with the students about their day and to listen and or offer advice on how to handle a bad situation.
