GRANDMA'S HOUSE MATH ACADEMY
7TH AND 8TH GRADERS
Grandma's House 7 - 8th grade math academy is scheduled to open in September 2014. We will use the on-line Khan Academy math program authored by Sal Khan and supported by Melinda and Bill Gates.
In 2012, Grandma's House piloted this program with the assistance of 5-7th graders. This pilot was done at Lincoln Elementary School. We found that this program really engaged the students. Its game like format and the use of technology was an incentive for students to learn math.
The students are able to work at their performance level. Initially, the program assesses the students and places them based upon their individual need. Students are able to work at their own pace supported by a classroom math coach and tools that are built into the program.
If a student is struggling with a concept, there is a button when pressed will give them a clue relative to the given problem. After some practice, if the student is still struggling, there is a youtube video that they can use to teach them the concept. Students are not able to move from one concept to another until they have reached proficient. All of this is computer driven.
The math coach on her tablet is able to view work that is being done or has been done, by any student. She is also able to monitor their progress, to determine which students need more small group or one-on-one support. This program keeps track of the work that students are doing both at home and during the math academy.
March 22, 2014, I received a report from the Khan Academy, which showed which of the students that helped pilot the program in 2012 were still using the program. This showed that even after the pilot, students were still using the program.
This is a wonderful program and we look forward to starting in January 2017, at our new facility. Please call for an application (559) 687-0925.
